The Biggest Upsets in Stanley Cup Playoff History

by | Apr 23, 2023

The Stanley Cup playoffs are full of surprises, and there have been many upsets over the years. Here are some of the biggest upsets in Stanley Cup playoff history:

  1. 1982 – Los Angeles Kings over Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers were the defending champions and had Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Jari Kurri, who were one of the greatest offensive lines in NHL history. The Kings were heavy underdogs, but they managed to beat the Oilers in the first round in five games.
  2. 1993 – Montreal Canadiens over Los Angeles Kings: The Kings were heavily favored to win the Cup that year, but the Canadiens, who were the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference, upset the Kings in the Final in five games. Canadiens goalie Patrick Roy was phenomenal in the series, and he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
  3. 1994 – Vancouver Canucks over New York Rangers: The Rangers were the top seed in the Eastern Conference and had the best record in the NHL that year. They were also led by Mark Messier, who had guaranteed a victory in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the New Jersey Devils. However, the Canucks, who were the seventh seed in the Western Conference, upset the Rangers in the Final in seven games. Canucks goalie Kirk McLean was outstanding in the series, and he won the MVP award.
  4. 2012 – Los Angeles Kings over New Jersey Devils: The Kings were the eighth seed in the Western Conference, but they dominated the playoffs, winning their first three series in just 14 games. They faced the New Jersey Devils in the Final, and although the Devils were a strong team, the Kings swept them in four games. Kings goalie Jonathan Quick was the MVP of the playoffs.

These upsets were surprising because the teams that won were not expected to do so. The underdogs played with heart and determination, and they were able to defeat more talented and higher-seeded teams. Goaltending also played a big role in some of these upsets, as the winning goalies were able to make key saves and keep their teams in games.
